FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. HOW MUCH OF THE MATERIAL USED IN MILLENNIUM LUMBER IS RECYCLED?
Millennium Lumber is extruded from post-consumer HDPE (high-density polyethelene) plastics and cellulose fibers. Both the plastic and the cellulose fibers are recycled materials.
2. CAN MILLENNIUM LUMBER BE PAINTED?
It is possible to paint our lumber but not recommended. We have many popular colors available to avoid painting.
3. WHAT SPECIAL TOOLS ARE REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION?
No special tools are required to work with Millennium Lumber. Virtually any tool you use with wood can be used on our lumber, however, carbide blades are recommended for the best performance.
4. CAN MILLENNIUM LUMBER BE NAILED OR DO YOU HAVE TO USE SCREWS?
Millennium Lumber should be installed with a high quality screw or nail, such as stainless steel or a hot dipped galvanized, to take full advantage of its longevity. As with wood, spiral or ring-shank nails provide better holding than common nails. There is no pre-drilling required to use either nails or screws, not even at the end of the lumber. We have found that if you make a countersink for the head you get a much nicer finish. Nail guns also work very well.
5. CAN MILLENNIUM LUMBER BE USED FOR STRUCTURAL MEMBERS SUCH AS BEAMS, JOISTS, AND POSTS?
While Millennium Lumber is a very durable product, it does not have the rigidity needed for load bearing members.
6. DO I NEED TO USE 12" JOIST SPACING FOR MILLENNIUM LUMBER?
For our 5/4 x 6 decking, the joist spacing should be no more than 16" on center. When installing decking on a 45 degree diagonal to the joists, the span should be reduced by at least 4".
